SOLV had a great time this past Saturday at the Sandy River with Valley Catholic students participating in a salmon toss. Several freshmen from the Valley Catholic Green Team trekked out to Sandy with their teacher, Erin Cole, to join SOLV staff, including our Executive Director, to toss dead hatchery salmon into the river to restore nutrient levels.
The fish are tossed to provide food for the juvenile salmon that will be born as soon as wild salmon migrate up the river as well as to provide much-needed nutrients to other aquatic wildlife. We were directed by Jeff of Oregon Department Fish and Wildlife and got some great insight into this important project.
We tossed over 300 fish, clad in garbage bags, in under two hours and are excited for our next toss!
