Rachel Carson Environmental Middle School students have been hard at work over the past few months developing and constructing native turtle habitat at Willow Creek.
In the hopes of attracting western pond and western painted turtles to the area, students have dug out two areas streamside to develop for habitat. They dug out invasive grasses, hauled it uphill to prevent muddy runoff into the stream, solarized the newly dug patch to kill any remaining seeds in the ground, dug trenches from the water for easier turtle passage and reinforced it with gravel. Students also spread straw around the newly dug areas to keep soil in its place. We will be continuing work on this new habitat throughout the coming months and years as well as monitoring the site with students for any turtle sightings.
